According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Oakhurst, the driver was reportedly behaving erratically, including throwing beer cans out of the window. This prompted the rangers to give chase, setting the stage for a wild sequence of events that would unfold in the hours to come.As the Kia Soul fled the park, it eventually crashed in the nearby community of Fish Camp, just a few miles south of Yosemite's southern entrance. The suspect then allegedly carjacked a Kia Optima from the Tenaya Lodge and continued his escape, heading south on Highway 41 towards the town of Oakhurst.

The Kia driver, undeterred, began intentionally crashing into the rear of the Tesla, attempting to force the other driver off the road.
