On average, the organization's program director, Kelly Rappl, says they are now assisting 125 to 150 families per day, a staggering figure that reflects the growing desperation among those struggling to put food on the table."The increasing need is concerning. The number of families coming in is a little heartbreaking and it's only getting worse," says Jo Wildeman, a volunteer at the food pantries for the past four years. Wildeman has witnessed firsthand the impact of inflation on families, many of whom are turning to these vital resources as their only option.

Diverse Faces of Hunger

Hunger, it seems, has no boundaries. "Unfortunately, it could be anybody in the neighborhood, it could be somebody you sit next to on the bus. It could be someone you sit next to at work or at church. Hunger has a face that's very diverse. It doesn't discriminate," Rappl explains.For some children, the food pantry may be their sole source of sustenance during the summer months when they are out of school. "To see families come in and be so excited over some basics that we take for granted. I really enjoy providing that food for them and to have that moment where they feel relief," Wildeman says, underscoring the profound impact these services have on the lives of those in need.

Fundraising Efforts to Support Families

In an effort to address the growing crisis, Catholic Charities is hosting its 7th annual "Drive Out Hunger" golf tournament on August 5th at the Preston Country Club in Cary.
