Wine Down Wednesday returns to raise money for local nonprofits

Raising Funds and Spirits: Coachella Valley's Philanthropic Wine Down Wednesdays

In the Coachella Valley, residents have discovered a unique way to give back to their community while indulging in a little midweek relaxation. The return of "Wine Down Wednesday" is providing a platform for local nonprofits to receive much-needed support, all while attendees enjoy a glass of wine and the company of friends.

Uncork Generosity, One Glass at a Time

Philanthropy Flows Freely on Wine Down Wednesdays

Marker Broadcasting, a Coachella Valley-based media company, has teamed up with local restaurants and sponsors to host a series of weekly happy hour events that benefit various nonprofit organizations. Every Wednesday throughout the summer, residents can visit participating establishments, such as Kitchen 86 + Bar, Foxy's, and The Hideout, to enjoy a happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. All proceeds from these events are then donated to the featured nonprofit. The idea for Wine Down Wednesday was the brainchild of Todd Marker, who previously worked in the wine industry in Minneapolis before transitioning into the broadcasting business. Marker saw this as an opportunity to showcase the Coachella Valley's vibrant dining scene while simultaneously supporting local charities. His wife, Meg Marker, a Rancho Mirage city councilmember, has been instrumental in the event's success, emphasizing the importance of community engagement for the locally owned media company.

Raising Funds and Awareness for Worthy Causes

The impact of Wine Down Wednesday has been substantial, with each event generating between ,000 and ,000 for the featured nonprofit organization. This includes funds raised through raffle ticket sales, in addition to the happy hour proceeds. Over the past 20 years, the series has raised close to million for Coachella Valley nonprofits, a testament to the generosity of the local community. The Markers are quick to share the credit, acknowledging the vital role played by their sponsors and the participating restaurants. "It would not be possible without our sponsors," said Meg Marker. "These events would not happen without restaurants stepping forward and offering us their space. We have lists of charities that would like this to happen every Wednesday. Our sponsors help our community more than they realize."

A Diverse Lineup of Beneficiaries

The 2023 Wine Down Wednesday series has a diverse lineup of nonprofit organizations set to benefit from the events. From July 17 to September 25, the happy hour events will raise funds for a wide range of causes, including Jewish Family Service of the Desert, Bighorn Institute, Pegasus Riding Academy, the Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City, Guide Dogs of the Desert, ACT for MS, United Cerebral Palsy, the Palm Springs Gay Men's Chorus, the Mizell Center, and Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine. This variety ensures that the philanthropic efforts of Wine Down Wednesday touch the lives of individuals and communities across the Coachella Valley, addressing a wide range of needs and supporting the vital work of local nonprofits.

A Collaborative Effort Fueled by Community Spirit

The success of Wine Down Wednesday is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the generosity of local businesses and residents. The Markers, along with their sponsors and the participating restaurants, have created a platform that allows individuals to enjoy a social gathering while making a meaningful impact on the lives of others. As philanthropy editor at The Desert Sun, Winston Gieseke emphasizes the importance of such initiatives, stating, "Over the past 20+ years, Wine Down Wednesday has raised close to million for Coachella Valley nonprofits, a testament to the generosity of the local community."The return of Wine Down Wednesday is a welcomed opportunity for Coachella Valley residents to come together, unwind, and make a difference in their community. By raising a glass and supporting local charities, attendees can enjoy the best of both worlds – a midweek respite and the satisfaction of giving back.
