Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA) has been at the forefront of this transformative movement, offering individuals of all abilities the opportunity to engage in a wide range of sports, including the rapidly growing wheelchair tennis program. By identifying the gaps in accessibility and actively addressing them, RAA has created a welcoming environment where athletes like Redeat and Simone can thrive.Anita O'Brien, the Executive Director of RAA, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, "We look around and say, well, what's not here? What's not being emphasized? Where do we not see access for people with disabilities? Tennis is not on that list. So we've been working over the past three years to change that and make sure if someone wants to play tennis, whether they're a youth or an adult, there's a place for them to do that."

Partnering with the USTA

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has taken note of the remarkable work being done in Rochester, and they have stepped up to provide invaluable support. Through a grant awarded to RAA, the USTA is helping to propel the wheelchair tennis program forward, ensuring that the athletes have access to the resources and guidance they need to excel.Jason Harnett, the Director of Wheelchair Tennis for the USTA, articulates the rationale behind this partnership, stating, "We just feel tennis is easily the most interpretable, meaning if you're someone who has had an injury or even born with a disability, the ability to go play tennis with your family members and friends who are able-bodied, there really is no complications. There's no real changes to the rules except a second bounce with a wheel chair athlete."

Inspiring the Next Generation

Redeat Shumaker, a 10th grader at Rush-Henrietta, has embraced the opportunity to participate in the wheelchair tennis program with open arms. She recalls the transformative impact her adoptive mother has had on her life, instilling a deep sense of confidence and encouraging her to explore a wide range of sports.Simone Carvatta, a senior at Rush-Henrietta, shares a similar experience, reflecting on the challenges she faced growing up when options for individuals with disabilities were limited. "I saw people on the playground. I'm like okay, I can't play with them. I can't be active with them. I can't play tag. I can't play football," Carvatta recalls.The wheelchair tennis program has not only provided these young athletes with the opportunity to engage in the sport they love but has also opened their eyes to the possibility of a future they may have never imagined. As Harnett aptly states, "If you dreamed to be a professional athlete with a disability, you now have a pathway to go to the very top."
